Trekking adventure trips in northern Patagonia

Trekking traverse joining two mountain huts hiking across Catedral mountain ridge, valleys and ridges with unbelievable views of the region ending by Jakob lagoon.
Season: November - April

Duration: 3 days/2 nights
Difficulty: Medium + (we trek through rocky terrain and might encounter some snow patches in this season)

Itinerary:
Day 1:
Our trek starts at the base station of cerro Catedral skiing resort at 1000 m above sea level. We follow a hiking trail that goes at the side of the mountain slowly going higher, smooth slopes that cross some creeks. There is abundant bamboo like cane (caña colihue) which expanded after a fire that years ago destroyed the indigenous forest. Gutiérrez lake and cerro Ventana are at sight along the first part of the trail. Then the trail gets into the Van Titter creek valley, which we cross it ahead. Lenga (nothofagus) forest and some shrubby species dominate this section of the trail. In Autumn time the reddish, copper like colors of this forest offer an amazing nature show.


After two hours hike the trail gets steeper and the last part is a constant slope. We will pass along Refugio (mountain hut - bivouac) Piedritas (little rock), an unusual bivouac built under a big rock. From there onwards we will observe how the vegetation gets shorter and scarce as we ascent, the Lenga shrubs will allow us to see the first rocky formations of the valley. After 4 hours hike we will see at the the foot of Aguja (spire) Frey, by Toncek lagoon the Refugio (mountain hut) Emilio Frey (at 1.700 m above sea level). The mountain hut is built in rock and wood surrounded by a circle of granite spires with funny forms. We stay for the night at Frey mountain hut.


Day 2:
After a tasty breakfast and having our backpacks ready we set off hiking to Refugio (mountain hut) San Martín 6-8 hs hike. Trekking along the Toncek lagoon and ascending at its end we get into rocky terrain until we reach the Catedral mountain ridge (at 2.000 m above sea level). On our hike upwards we pass along Schmoll lagoon and the so-called 'cancha de fútbol' (football court), a wide, flat area at the ridge top. From the ridge the view is magnificent to Rucaco valley, cerro tres Reyes, torre principal (main Catedral tower) and the majestic Mount Tronador at the background. From the ridge we descent to the valley, we hike through the valley and then ascent again to Brecha Negra pass descending then to Refugio (mountain hut) San Martín, Jacob lagoon.


Day 3:
In the morning we go for a short hike to Témpanos lagoon and Schweitzer pass. Then, after lunch, we start our way back, descending through the Casa de Piedra stream valley to the end of the hiking trail where a shuttle service will take us back to the city.

Included: Mountain guide, private shuttle services, all the meals during the program (breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner) energy supplements and snacks, hot beverages, non alcoholic beverages. Group equipment (tents, cooking ware) mountain hut or other lodging according to the program, technical equipment, if needed (snowshoes, crampons, piolets, etc), first aid kit, communications equipment and mobile phone, insurance (not medical insurance)

Not Included: airplane tickets or other transfer services not included in the program, alcoholic beverages, personal gear, everything not mentioned as INCLUDED

Personal equipment - clothing: sleeping bag, 60 lts. backpack, therma rest, trekking (hiking) shoes or sneakers, cloths change, waterproof jacket, etc.
